As published on the UK government E10 checker, reproduced word for word. Checked 25 October 2026.
E10 petrol is cleared for use in all Volvo cars with petrol engines introduced to the market since 1976 based upon servicing and other conditions according to the equipment and material with which the vehicle was originally equipped.
E10 petrol is not cleared for a limited number of S/V40 models with petrol engines produced in the mid-1990s with engine type 1.8 GDI. These should continue to use E5.

Questions about Volvo and E10
Can my Volvo use E10 petrol?
Volvo says E10 is fine for its petrol cars from 1976, with a few listed exceptions. Older ones should use E5.
What if I put E10 in an older Volvo?
A single tank in a non-approved car will not cause damage, according to UK government advice. Fill up with E5 next time and keep using E5.
Where do I find E5 for my Volvo?
In the UK, E5 is sold as the "super" or "premium" unleaded grade (97+ octane) at most larger filling stations. Check the E5 label on the pump.
How else can I check my Volvo?
Look for an E10 label inside the fuel filler flap, check the owner's handbook, or ask a Volvo dealer.
