How to choose
- Look inside the fuel filler flap. An "E10" label means you can use it.
- Check the handbook for "E10" or "EN 228".
- Use the E10 checker for your manufacturer's official statement and exceptions.
- Still unsure? Use E5. Any petrol vehicle that runs on unleaded can safely use E5.
Is E5 "better" for an approved car?
Not for an everyday car that is approved for E10. You pay more for E5 super mainly because of its higher octane. Some high-performance engines are tuned for 97โ98 octane and may run slightly better on super; your handbook says if that applies.
Same labels across Europe
The E5 and E10 circle labels are the same across the EU and UK (standard EN 16942). In Germany look for "Super E10", in France "SP95-E10" (E10) versus "SP95" or "SP98" (E5).
